My Great-great Grandfather. Sustained a gunshot wound to the leg at Lynchburg, Virginia on June 18, 1864 and died in the Army Hospital in Gallipolis, Ohio on July 22, 1864. Was in camp in Charleston, WV on June 28th. Unusual that he was brought back with the retreating army while most of the wounded were abandoned in Lynchburg. Any insight into this would be very helpful.

ATHEY, AUSTIN, Private, Company 'E', 11th Regiment W. Va. Infantry. Mustered in 28 Aug 1862, Ravenswood, W. Va. Gunshot wound to head at battle of Cedar Creek 19 Oct 1864. Died from wound at Point of Rocks, Maryland, 11 Feb 1865. Buried in the National Cemetary, City Point, Virginia. Age 26. Brother of Dudley.

Enoch Frazier was born in Wood County Va. in 1832. Wirt County was formed from Wood County in 1848. In 1862 he and his younger brother James went to Ravenswood Jackson County and signed up in August 1862. He served the rest of the war in many battles in present WV and down the Shenandoah Valley to the end of the war. He was mustered out in June 1865 at Richmond Va. He returned home to Newark, Wirt County WV raised a family on his farm and died in 1905. I am his great great grandson John Frazier.

James Frazier was born in Wood County VA. in 1838. Wirt County was formed from Wood in 1848. James along with his older brother Enoch went to Ravenswood Jackson County VA.now WV in August 1862 to volunteer for the union cause. He served the rest of the war and was in many battles in WV and down the Shenandoah Valley to Appox.Courthouse. He was musterd out June 1865 at Richmond Va. He returned home to Newark, Wirt County WV where he farmed and raised his family. He is my great great great uncle. John Frazier

My third great-grandfather, William Walker Curtis was KIA at Battle of New Creek, WV on 4 August 1864.

'William Walker Curtis did not live in Roane County for a long time as his life was cut short by the Civil War; but during the time he lived here, he was well-respected and ran a large, prosperous farm. His friend, James Riddle, named the Curtis District for William Walker Curtis while he was serving the Union Forces; the district had once been a part of Kanawha County, Jackson County and finally became Roane County in 1863.

William Walker Curtis was born in Lewis County (W)VA on 29 August 1832, the son of John and Prudence (Cutright) Curtis. On 18 March 1850, he married Rebecca Wetzel also of Lewis County, the daughter of David F. and Regina (Fultz/Foltz) Wetzel. In Hardesty's book, Mrs. Curtis maintained that she was a direct relative of Lewis Wetzel, the famed Indian fighter. The William Curtises lived in Lewis County for the first few years of their marriage and then settled on the Upper Reedy Creek area of Roane County where they raised their large family.

On 22 August 1862, Curtis enlisted in the army as a member of Company F, 11th Regiment of Virginia Infantry. He was promoted from ranks to sergeant within a week and then to Lieutenant on March 7, 1863. He was taken prisoner by the Confederates, but exchanged and reported for duty once more. He was killed in action at the battle of New Creek, West Virginia, and buried at Ravenswood, Jackson County, West Virginia, where his grave lies unmarked and forgotten.' (Roane County History 1989)

Note: I have since located his grave and obtained a military marker for it.

STATION - New Creek, WVa. RECORD OF EVENTS - July 3rd, 1864 changed stations from Clarksburg to New Creek a distance of 100 miles; Aug 7th, 1864 had an engagement with the forces under Genl McCausland near Cumberland, Md.; sustained no loss; Aug 4th, 1864 had an engagement with the forces under Genl McCausland at New Creek; Lt. W.W.Curtis, Company F, 11th was killed on the field; 4 privates wounded slightly.

Isaac Taylor (age 40) enlisted for 3 years on Mar 27, 1862 at Coals Mouth, Kanawha Co., [West] Virginia in Co. G of the 11th Regiment Va Infantry. This organization subsequently became the 11 Reg't W. Va. Inf. Issac began his service as a Sargeant when the unit was mustered into service on May 23, 1862 at Coals Mouth. He was mustered out of service on May 15, 1865 at Richmond, Virginia.
Record of Isaac's discharge from service is found in Will Book 2, page 612 at the Cabell County, West Virginia Courthouse. It was recorded on November 22, 1866

Henry mustered in on September 21, 1862. 11th West Virginia Infantry, Company I.; Private. His service dates are : 8-14-1862 to 5-16-1865. He mustered out at U.S. General Hospital, Cumberland, Maryland. There was a notation on his records as his having the measles. He died of consumption June 24, 1870.

WIA at the battle of Cloyd's Mountain, May 9, 1864.

I have a web page with rosters, medical records, pension records, cemetery sites, campaigns, etc., on the 11th WV Infantry. Benjamin was WIA at the battle of 2nd Kernstown on July 24, 1864, and at the battle of Hatchers Run, March 31, 1865. He suffered from severe sunstroke on a forced march into Maryland on July 31, 1864, already weakened from a gunshot wound the week before.
